1. Why won’t my washer drain?
Common causes include a clogged drain pump filter, a blocked drain hose, or a failing drain pump. Clearing the filter and checking the hose for kinks or debris usually solves it. If the pump is noisy or not running, it may need replacement.
2. Why is my washer shaking or vibrating so much?
Excessive vibration often comes from an unbalanced load, worn suspension rods/shocks, or the machine not being level. Redistribute the laundry and ensure the washer sits firmly on all four feet. If the shaking continues, the suspension system may need service.
3. Why does my washer smell bad?
Odors usually come from detergent buildup, trapped moisture, or mold in the door gasket (front-loaders). Running a hot cleaning cycle with washer cleaner and wiping the gasket regularly helps prevent smells.
4. Why won’t my washer start?
Check that the door/lid is fully closed, the breaker hasn’t tripped, and the control lock isn’t on. Faulty lid switches, door locks, or control boards can also prevent the washer from starting.
5. Why is my washer not spinning?
A washer may fail to spin due to an unbalanced load, a worn drive belt, a faulty lid switch/door lock, or a failing motor. Front-loaders may also stop spinning if the drain system is clogged.
6. How much detergent should I use?
Most modern washers require far less detergent than people think. Using too much can cause residue, odors, and poor cleaning. Follow the detergent label and washer manual — and always use HE detergent in HE machines.
7. How long should a washer last?
The average lifespan is 10–14 years with proper maintenance. Regular cleaning, avoiding overloading, and using the right detergent can extend its life.
8. Is it normal for my washer to make noise?
Some noises are normal — like water valves clicking or the pump humming. Loud banging, grinding, or squealing usually indicates worn bearings, a loose drum, or a failing motor component and should be checked by a technician.
